You can ride the Genbi Shinkansen with a Japan Rail Pass
The Genbi Shinkansen drives from Echigo-Yuzawa to Niigata and back. You can reserve your seat with a Japan Rail Pass.
You can ride the 12-16 cars with your pass without reservation. But be careful, the Genbi Shinkansen is only available on Weekends, some holidays and it goes only 3 rounds (to Echigo-Yuzawa) a day. See when you can ride the train here (You can find the calendar on the link page below) .

Cafe and Kid's space are stylish
If you are very fond of the modern artworks in the train, a round trip is recommended. There is a kid’s space and a cafe in the train. The seats are very comfortable. You can really enjoy your art appreciation in the train.

How to ride the Genbi Shinkansen
Sorry, it is not so easy to ride the Genbi Shinkansen as we already mentioned. Therefore, maybe it is better to book your seat in advance.
You should take the Joetsu Shinkansen to Echigo-Yuzawa from Tokyo. If you want to stay in Nigata, the last station and returning station of the Genbi Shinkansen, the round trip is not necessary. But if you want to go back to Tokyo or to visit other cities, the round trip is better.
